Morphine found in the body is a peptide hormone that exhibits opiate-like effects. It is synthesized and secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. In the human body, endorphins are hormones produced by brain tissue to reduce pain in aching tissues. The hormone's function is to numb the nerves to reduce the intensity of pain and cause less discomfort. The analgesic effect of endorphins is approximately 30 times stronger than that of morphine.
It is also known as the happiness hormone. Its release increases in situations such as excitement, pain, exercise, consumption of spicy foods, sex, and orgasm.
