Friction

Friction 留め縄 (tomenawa) literally means friction. These knots, which you can also see as Encounter knots on our site, are transitional knots that are tied at the intersections of the ropes such as overlapping, diagonal, horizontal etc. during a pattern / binding, to maintain tension, reduce and strengthen friction, add additional pattern and shape to the patterns, and direct the rope. These knots are not closed like a knot, they are frequently used until the rope changes direction and the final knot is tied.
