The term "bottom" describes the individual in a BDSM interaction who is physically or emotionally directed, controlled, or susceptible to influence. This role typically refers to someone who appears passive in relation to a dominant or top partner, but who actually interacts with active consent and choice. Being a bottom doesn't always equate to being submissive; a bottom might only want to experience physical acts in a specific scene but not necessarily assume a submissive role in the relationship dynamic. For example, actions such as being tied up, inflicted pain, or subjected to emotional play can constitute the bottom role. This identity can be scene-specific or become part of the individual's overall orientation. Bottoms establish both physical and emotional boundaries during the experience, derive pleasure within those boundaries, and value aftercare at the end of the encounter. It is seen as a role where control is relinquished but the individual retains the right to determine the direction of the process.
